So according to UPN, Dawn falls in love with a Jock, then Buffy and Willow follow suit. Any thoughts?

Hmmm, I know I might end up regretting it come next week, but I personally, just from the preview, don't find "Him" looking all that appealing. I know that Joss Whedon said that he wanted to take it back a notch and make this season more like the first, but does that mean that everybody has to get their old hair back too? Or that we have to forget about poor Spike sitting in the basement all by his lonesome (delusions notwithstanding). Anyways, not complaining, just noticing.

Just finished watching this one...it was good! Doesn't look like this season's classic episode or anything, but I like Drew Z. Greenberg's writing.
The extents that Buffy, Dawn, Willow, and Anya were willing to go to so as to prove who loved R.J. the most were pretty whacked...I loved Anya robbing the bank. And Dawn's sexy dance with R.J....not something we see Dawn do everyday. I cracked up when Xander and Willow were attracted before they found out who it was...Kudos to Drew. ~Jane~

definately worthy of many phrogish giggles... tho... I had to draw the line at bad 70's music... I especially like the fight scene going on outside Principal Wood's office with the Buffster and Spike... "oooh look, a bazooka... WHAMTACKLEROLL... scuffle scuffle scuffle... Spike running off with the bazooka... Buffy following... and you can almost hear the 'Hey! That's MINE!'... and then the 'ya ever get that feeling someone is watching you' look on Wood's face afterwards" nicely played.
on other notes... can't say I'm a huge Spike fan (haven't been since oh, season 2)... but I have to say the minimal dialogue from him tonight was kinda cool. Kudos to James for remembering that a well placed look can launch more than a thousand ships... I'm actually anticipating when they focus back on Spike again... but I'm patient, I can wait... ---Phrogie "Buffy, get off the boy, we're going home." |

Yeah, it was definately nice to see an episode with no major issues or downers. It was also nice to watch and be able to laugh, because it was quite a funny episode. Oh my god I felt so bad for Dawn in her tryouts... I almost wanted to quit watching at how big of a fool she made out of herself... the things a person will do for love (whether real or not). Lots of funny, a good break from what we've been getting.
Still would have been sort of nice to see Willow turn RJ into a female, and the female playing the part be Amber Benson... ah well. When the season began, I kept thinking they would bring up more Tara, and actually let Tara in a way live on in the show. But the farther it goes, the less Tara mention we get, and I'm beginning to really feel like they have just swept her under the carpet. Its very possible to have mention of Tara, to pay her tribute, to give the show some part of her without making the episode all tearful or serious. They still give mention to Buffy's mom in spots, why not Tara? If it was just a character that was in maybe 1 season, or even 2, I could see it, but until this Season, Tara had been on the show for half of its entire run. She was almost on it longer than Angel, and thats saying something. But, I suppose I'll stop griping over that, just makes me feel a little cheated. A mention here and there, maybe not even every episode, but something would make me happy. |

Uhm...was I only the only one who thought that Dawn's lil dancing scene and look at the Bronze was kinda reminiscent (sp?) of Faith?
OKay, I thought the epsiode was pretty good. It was funny, although, ouch...gettinr run down by a train is not the way I would pick to kill myself. Gotta love Anya's bankrobbing though. That is so something she would do. BTW, how does Emme manage to dye her hair so many times, going black which is the worst thing for your hair, and it never looks dried out?!?! Him was by no means a classic but it was sure a lot of fun. After a few episodes with heavy stuff it was nice to have this breather and just enjoy the characters. Plus this is the first time since forever that the Scoobies were the Scoobies, even if some of them were under AJ's spell at some point. Not a whole lot to analyze here but the bits that really cracked me up:
-Xander and Willow's reaction to Dawn dancing and their reaction to their reaction. -The very 70's four-square windows to show who was up to what. -The aforementioned bazooka scene was comedic genius. When the mood is right slapstick just works so well and it did here. -Spike and Xander's solution to getting AJ's coat. |

Re: Episode Discussion: Him

I did not find the episode amusing. In fact, I thought some parts were downright degrading. If Buffy did what was implied with R.J., gee, I think she should be in jail. Smooching him due to a spell - that's understandable and in step with a love spell. But if she honestly went there? That's disgusting, deplorable and illegal. R.J.'s age was never stated, but some assume he was 16, Dawn's age. Buffy is 21. If that was Xander letting people get physical with him, fans would have had a fit and a half, calling him irresponsible and so forth. Xander had enough of a clue in BB&B to tell stop lovestruck Buffy from going too far.
BB&B was ten times funnier than this. It was also quite a bit more respectable and decent. It showed that actions have consequences. People such as Giles and Oz were completely disgusted with what Xander had done. Xander hadn't meant to make everyone fall in love with him -- just Cordelia -- and his motive made sense, due to their breakup and their characterizations. The spell went wrong, wackiness ensued, but at no point did Xander fully take advantage of any of the women once he knew what was going on and that the attention/affection was false. HIM had a guy who had a jacket that had been passed down from his brother, who had gotten it in turn from his father. We had never heard of this brother before, we still don't know what happened to the father, and we still don't know what happened to the jacket in the first place - how long it has been enchanted or whathaveyou. All we got for completion was a jacket being burned, everyone being okay, everyone smiling, Anya not having to pay for holding up multiple establishments (the radio announcement at the end said they were hold ups) and everything played like a big joke. Willow wasn't in the teaser act nor the first act. It felt as if Spike was forced and used; there was none of the funny Xander/Spike interaction that there was in Hush (which - in another case of "syndie freaky" - aired on FX today) nor the hostility we love to hate. Dawn was ready to die for this boy, at which point it would have been nice for Buffy or SOMEONE to mention that Buffy did die for Dawn in The Gift - because as much as I disliked The Gift, I would have rather heard that THAT was what snapped Buffy out of it, the connection. Something . . . more. Season Seven has been strong and steady, with the exception of this episode. I'm sorry, but if this had been on another show like Charmed, you KNOW many of us would have been saying, "Gee, what a BtVS rip-off," or, "Wow, someone watched Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, huh?" I still think that BB&B is one of the funniest BtVS episodes ever. It holds up after all of this time not just because the writing was funny, but because the writing was true to form and to character. It continued seasonal arcs - Buffy suffering through Valentine's Day, Angelus trying to kill Buffy's friends, Drusilla, Cordelia/Xander, Giles/Jenny, Amy dealing with witchcraft, Oz/Willow - and it wrapped itself up tidily. It is not that I'm holding HIM up to BB&B and refusing to see the light. It is that you can't help but compare the two, what with the similar plotlines and the fact that a clip of the old episode was purposely within the new episode. There was a great deal of music in tonight's episode. The theme to A Summer Place was funny the first time, but didn't end up being directly connected to the jacket, so it either should have been used every time as a signal (ie I Only Have Eyes for You) or just the first time, when Dawn fell off of the bleachers. I did like the espionage score music when the four women were each on a mission. I wished for better editing, both sound and visual. As always, I'd rather watch my least favorite episode of BtVS on repeat than watch many other shows out there. This episode was not the worst one I've ever seen. I simply won't ever fall in love with it. Asleep now, Little Willow |

Hey LW - Yeah I can see many of your points, but I don't believe that Buffy did go that far with RJ and I don't think that RJ knew the full impact of the jacket as his brother didn't either. They just knew that girls liked them. The fact that when the jacket was taken from him at the end he didn't seem to care to much signifies it.
Of course I laughed alot and felt the total pain of highschool again through Dawn's cheerleading tryout, nice call back to The Witch, and the other escapes of the women.. am I the only one who wants to see more Emma and Aly scenes.. Yea!! The editing did seem really jerky, but it kinda worked as the episode jerked the feelings around. I generally enjoyed the hour and was glad that I got to laugh for more time than season six allowed me to. Yea for the slapstick! Yea for the cheesy Charlie's Angels... and man, how would Anya take the money back anyways... "Here, this is the money that was stolen..." I don't know that could be fun as well.... Okay Bed now... Saints preserve us from the sex happy eps. We've all seen them before something happens to the normal heroic reserve everyone has and their inner Pepe' Le Peu's are let out to play. It's not the first time this type of thing has been done, it's not even the first time it has been done on Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Season 2's Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered was just such an ep, as the flashback showed, and it numbers as one of my favoirte episodes. That's an example of it being done right. "Him" I am far less enthusiastic about and one of the reaosns is... him. The biggest problem with sex happy eps is that you ARE taking the characters out of character. It's one damn delicate balance, and if not done properly it yanks them even father out of character. In B,B&B we didn't KNOW anything was amiss until Amy used the same line Buffy did when she did an about face on her "feelings" for Xander. In that case we knew she cared for him, and we couldn't just dismiss that maybe those feelings had changed. In this case it's all about ...*drumroll please*... this guy! You've never seen him before, and you'll probably never see him again, but for the next 45 minutes he's the man. With Dawn now in the mix I know they couldn't just have it be Xander again, but Carlos from Lessons could have tried out for the team, or a jock could have been one of those in the montage visiting Buffy in "Help". Unlike the character of Cassie who's anonimity was supposed to enhance the tragedy of her TOTALLY contrived death the idea of an anonomous character who everyone suddenly falls in love with is as corny as Cassie was supposed to be tragic. It shows that again in the fact that not only did anyone have any feelings for the quarterback in question before the fact, no one had feelings for him after. In B.B &B both Cordy and Willow had fallout with Xander after the fact. After this one Anya treated everyone to ice cream. In comparision Buffy seducing one of her students and trying to kill a member of the faculty practically makes sense. Only snippets, small, small snippets were enjoyable. The look Willow got when Anya inadvertantly suggested turning him into a woman. The scene when Buffy was stopped from using the miracously available bazooka. The scene where they realized Dawn was doing the dirty dancing, and that's it. The rest fell flat IMHO. As a small note I think either next weeks ep and it's mention of Tara will either bind wounds, or pour salt in them. 3 guesses which one I'm leaning toward.         |

Him: **
Con: Not the best episode of the season. Too talky and very little of it interesting. Michelle sounded like she was struggling through her lines when 'Dawn' was talking to the jocks and cheerleaders. I'd expect Spike moving in with Xander would be more "Odd Couple." I guess with Spike having a soul, the animosity and loathing isn't there anymore. At least not on his part. Xander, however, at first, seemed a little annoyed at the idea. Then it was Spike and Xander 'saving the day' because the women were under a spell. Pro: Buffy aiming a rocket launcher at an oblivious principle. Spike wrestling said rocket launcher from Buffy. Trailer: In regards to next week, I will wait and see. |

i liked. was funny and amused me, and made me go "oh no...oh buffy ew....oh my gawd...dawn..what the.....mwah! work around it..hehe". it was far from the current well developin storyline, but wicked funny.
steph: maybe charisma and emma exchange hair dressin knowledge, as cordie has a new hairstyle/dew/color almost every 2 eps too. maybe the hair is a higher sign.....and yeah buffy hair looked.....not so funky. never liked her s1 hair. |

Re: Episode Discussion: Him

couple of things to just point out for... um... the sake of pointing them out...
1) I don't think we were talking about a 16 year old kid... I got the feeling he was at the very least a year ahead of Dawn... and possibly a senior... couple things led me to this: the conversation Dawn started with in regards to the teacher... yeah, she said "old school" but I'm thinking that's prolly because the new SDHS only opened this year... the other thing was this... I don't care how -good- the kid is, you usually don't have a sophmore as yer start quarterback... much less a captain of the team... so yeah, he's still young, but I don't think we're talking statutory rape here in the Buffster's case... just bad taste and bad judgement, due to the spell. 2) Bazooka/Rocket Launcher... somehow, I can't see them as gotten rid of it from Season 2... I would bet it was the same one as was used to blowed up the Judge. DW... keep an open mind about next week's ep... I agree that this might be the "make or break" episode in regards to mention of Tara... but I've a feeling that whatever happens, it's gonna be one of those turning points... and for the "Did Anyone Else Notice This" File: Dawn is squeeky when she falls over... and she seems to be falling over an awful lot this season... for some odd reason, I find this more amusing than it warrents. and... is anyone here kinda wishing that Larry hadn't gotten kilt... and for had come back to the HS as like a football coach or something... and then go on to wonder if the jacket would have worked on him? ---Phrogie yes, it's 2:50am... and I think fatigue has settled in and made my brain into a nice bean-bag chair... |

Re: Episode Discussion: Him

I thought of the Judge as well, but thinking they had a rocket launcher in stroage... possible, totally possible, even continuous. Still, why didn't they take it after Glory then? Might not have killed her, but could have helped when they were trying to soften her up with the Buffybot and then wrecking ball.
Still, I would put him at 17 because Dawn had his teacher/class from the previous year. So I would put him at 17 and a junior. Which still puts Buffy in the Buttafucco camp. The spell is totally to blame, but again icky, because even is he was 18 there is the abuse of authority issue. I mean she pulled him out of class for a make out/arugably sex session. (Buffy did call him her lover.) And again, I said bind wounds or salt them. I'm just a BTVS pessimist. |

well.......buffy is the law as she said and riding high on her duty call. so it was even more funny to see buffy dewin something illegal. i liked how she went on about how she was just recently in high skewl, and acted like there was no real age difference. i just thought it was a very funny ep. *shrugs*

Re: Episode Discussion: Him

Okay....so this was the weakest ep of the season. That's not to say it was bad tho....It was still funny and i giggled a lot - but I couldn't help comparing it to BB&B. Bit of a re-hash.
Willow was far too lacking in the opening scenes. Everytime I thought I saw Willow..turned out to be dawn...and we know how I feel about Dawn *G*. But like I said, I was still amused. Liked the seventies editing when the four girls went off to do their thing. Trust Anya to go hold up some banks - although I'm not entirely sure what the heck she was going to do with the money. Loved Xander and Buffy saying the wrong thing while trying to comfort Dawn. I found Spike stealing the bazooka from Buffy very funny. Dunno why...just tickled me. As did the stealing of the jacket by Xander and Spike at the end. (Xander and Spike tho..that's just weird..I'm very surprised Buffy managed to talk Xander in to that one, especially as Xander has been irked everytime Spike has been in proximity). Two things irritated me - although the scene in general was funny, was the constant drilling of the willow's gay, willow likes girls, willow doesn't like boys lines. Damage Control to appease the voices me thinks. (i've made my opinion on willow before..so let's not get into an argument for those that disagree) The second - Buffy dropping in on Anya and wanting to help. The same Buffy that tried to kill her last week (well when she was Anyanka) was acting like there was nothing between them. Telling her she shouldn't drop out of the circle - yet Anya hadn't really been part of the circle since pretty much Hells Bells. I just found that all rather odd. Progie - Dawn falling over and squealing amuses me too. Probably cause I don't like her Been done before...still funny...roll on next week. ++ "Confused, maybe - never scared."

tasha: yes, that was indeed irritating. and with recent interviews of joss and marti bout the willow issue, i can imagine why they stressed the point. although i dont really buy it....
and yeah....the continuity was weak in this ep. with anya and stuff. but still.......made me laugh a hell lot. ill wait for real stories to come up again next week. it was nice to just have a comedic riot ep inbetween. |
