As for the Valerie Harper story...
VH did a 1 woman play in Chicago. Well, I begged my mom for tickets for my birthday. I told her that was all I wanted. Being the loving, wonderful mother that she is, she bought them for me and also decided to see if there was anyway I could meet VH. So my mom called around and found her publisist, who told my mom that VH was busy and nothing could be arranged. I didn't know all of this until later.
Well, the day of the play, I was going nuts, so we drove to the city early. We got to the theater and I ran ahead holding the door open for my mom. I heard a voice say "Thank you very much" I looked back and realized that my mom wasn't behind me. Valerie Harper was! She smiled at me and made some comment about Chicago winters. I just stood there, shaking like a leaf, tears pouring down my face.
Her smile faded when she saw my tears and she asked me if I was alright. I have no idea to this day where my voice went. My mom finally caught up to me and realized what was going on. She told Valerie Harper that I was a big fan, it was my 21 b-day and all I wanted was to see her and all that.
She was so nice to me. She said that she had to go get ready for the play, but asked me to wait afterwards for her. I don't remember the play at all. I just kept thinking, It's Rhoda, It's Rhoda.
After the play, we waited for her. She came out with her husband and daughter. We talked for a little bit. She signed a ton of stuff and took a bunch of pictures with me. (One is still framed and in display in my house).
Then she said she was hungry and asked if we wanted to go with her and her family to eat. So we all went next door to this Mexican restaurant. She bought me my first drink, a margarita.
My mom and I still talk about that dinner in awe. Valerie Harper and her husband are the nicest people, very down to earth. We talked about everything from the show to the play. My mom and her were talking about daughters and 70's fashion for awhile. A definte fan's dream come true.
Brings back good memories. I am shaking just remembering. Now if I could only meet Mary Tyler Moore. I would not only lose my voice, but I think I'd faint as well.
That's my story.
Eva
Forever...I hope.
