to keep the other topics nice and non depressing I figured a separate thread would be wise (correct me if I''m wrong about that)
I just read this in a youtube comment:
The CCC at my college voted yes on behalf of all the students without their permission. If this happened at other schools that definately would have
had an impact on the outcome.
I am going to contact this girl and try to get some more info, maybe pass it on to the people who are going to court against prop8... |

Found this on Lambda Legal's
website:
Lambda Legal is "a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work." Lambda Legal, along with the ACLU and The National Center for Lesbian Rights have already filed a lawsuit challenging Prop 8. These are all non-profit organizations that provide their services for free to their clients. Want to help? Send them your donations. DOTR: I wish more people in this country would think like you do. Maybe I should move over there... |

well that's a start... a very small comfort to the lucky ones that got blessed in time.
FF: come to our side, we've got cookies and speak English when needed. I'm extremely happy that I live in the country that legalized Gay Marriage months before I could legaly get married anyway. And proud that we were the first one to do so. But I also recognise the fact that I'm very blessed to have these rights and should not take them for granted as long as there are others who can't share in my joy. |

The Prop 8 vote will be a stake in our hearts for a long time to come. Even if it is overturned, we will never understand how the voters of california could
have done this.
The other point is us, as Americans, believe so much in the right to vote, but we do not have large percentages of voters that vote. We have not had a national election, since 1932, that had 50% of voters voting. There are a lot of reasons for this. The largest one given is, "We were working and did not have time." Yes, most people voted into office, and most decisions voted in or out, are done by less than 50% of the voters. Things that may help are changing voting to the weekends, increase internet voting, increased days of early voting, or pass a law that one must vote. COMMA

maybe there should be a law that votings are not valid if the percentage of people that have cast their vote stays below a certain percentage.
forcing people to vote will effect the outcome of elections since people who do not care will vote for anything that crosses their path first, making them a nice toy to fundemantalists of any kind. The problem on prop 8 might be the fact that people don't care. My best friend is a good example, when I told her about prop 8 she said " sorry, I don't care, hope that doesn't bother you" she wasn't being mean or whatever, she just couldn't be bothered with this subject. She has many gay friends though and she respects them, even though she isn't always comfortable with me discussing beautiful women. the point I'm trying to illustrate is that p.there are probably heaps of people out there who would have voted no, because they respect gay people and their rights to marry... but just didn't care enough to go vote. Religious hypocrites (they are full of sins themselves, I could write you a list of what they are doing wrong, bible quotes and all) have a broad network and dedication to "preach" everyone into voting, we don't have that. loads of gays are closeted or carefull about who they tell, so we've got a big disadvantage on that point when it comes to votes. Even most celebs didn't speak out about this, though they were gay or befriended with gay people. There isn't much preparedness (is that a good word) to stand up and speak out and proud. We are mostly in the shadows and that might be one of the reasons this happened. the bigots had some pretty statements, some even got me doubting if gay marriage is right (not for long off course because on second thought those arguments didn't really make sense,,, they did look convincing though) so if people hear just one side of the story. yes I know much publicity money is spend on both sides, but I'm afraid it's hard beating bigots at their own preaching games. |

Sorry I didn't find this thread first before posting my two cents in the Random Thoughts thread. The whole thing is just frustrating beyond belief.

that's why I made this thread so we can be frustrated but we can choose to ignore it when nescesairy.
I just read that the oldest gay rights orginasation in the world is facing the chance of disapearing due to lack of funding COC has done many good things, I hope they make it through the crisis |

You could try couchsurfing.com for other folks who might be going to the prop 8 protest, that would solve transport issues for you in LA too.

I booked a hostel for a shorter stay, 10 days may be too much anyway, and I had just enough for 4 nights on my card.
Couchsurfing didn't work out last time I tried... I always find my way wherever on the globe as long as the people speak Dutch, English, German or French. So the flight is booked too and I'll be flying over like a crazy person. |

I obviously can't make it to LA on such short notice, but I'll be attending a protest here in Portland.

I have written to the Democratic Party, even though I'm not an American, expressing my happiness over Barack's election but also my profound shock over
this vote.
I hope everyone fights on this one as I do see this as much of a civil rights issue as Rosa Parks sitting on that seat. I wonder what AMber thinks of the Proposition 8 ruling? I'm pretty sure she would be voting against Prop 8 and I hope if asked to give help to overturn it she will do so. Time for everyone to band together on this one it really is.

Amber has always been supportive of gay rights
is anyone else going to LA? I picked LA because I wanted to be in Callifornia and LA seemed like the most fun city to visit, I'll stay a couple of days since I'm coming from far far away. one word: jetlagfunnnn |

I'm sure she will be against Prop 8 too, but I also think it'sa time for all voices: large and small, influential or not, to make themselves heard on
this decision. And in that hope I do hope AMber has gone to task and is helping in her own way to overturn Prop 8.

it's time for openness, the fact that many people don't dare to come out as GLBT or as straight-but-supportive is the main reason that many people
don't know what being gay really is.
If people don't know what Lesbians, Gays, Muslims, Jewish people or whatever minority group really are, never having met one, they'll believe the oppionions others hand them. This are usually negative stories since it's human nature to talk about the bad stuff and take the good for granted. Also it gives a free playfield to all kinds of bigot people to preach others into hating the minority they find "inconvenient". I know very many religious, straight people, of different beliefs, that aren't bigot at all, so it doesn't have to be us against whatever God. There should just be dialogue, open discussion, people popping out of the closet like rainbow-colored-daisies and doing the "we're not so threathning, are we" thingie. Too bad people are afraid to do that, even I feel it sometimes, though I'm very open, for the past 12 years even, and live in a country that's very respectful to GLBT's. It even seems to be getting worse lately. People at school being scared of me, a friend even telling me not to touch her, though I would never do anything "lesbian" to her anyway. 2 of my best friends told me to be a little less loud and proud, to only tell it to people I really know. I don't do preaching or schouting it across the room right after "hi, I'm Dorothy" but I do say it right away when the topic comes up (except for my landlord, since I don't know what his oppinion is and getting another room is on the verge of impossible) I anyone sees the closet it's open and full of rainbows and I damn well am not going to close it unless there's a really good reason, meaning only first life needs like food and a home. Too bad not everyone dares to do this. It get's harder on me too, people are getting harder, there's probably a connection to the economy, it makes people antsy and eager to rule out anyone that's not "theirs". |

Here's the thing...we're everywhere and we're not silent anymore. We're no longer slinking about in the shadows with our "roommates"
and "long time companions". We're not going back and we're not going away. I hold out hope that Prop 8 will be overturned.

The State of Connecticut issued the first marriage license to a same sex couple this morning. This was the result of the State Supreme Court ruling last month
that barring same sex marriages was against the laws of the state and the state's constitution.
